General Rules

The rhythm of a Johnian day

Good schooling begins with a settled morning. These are the timings we keep, the attendance we expect, and what the school asks of every parent to make both possible.

School Timings

7.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m., every working day

The gate closes at 8.00 a.m. sharp. A child who arrives after it is marked late, so please build a small margin into the journey to school.

The School Day

Four hours that set the tone

From the moment the gates open to the moment they close, the day runs to a fixed clock.

7.30a.m.

Gates open

The campus is staffed from this hour onwards. Students may arrive and settle any time after the gates open.

8.00a.m.

Gates close · Assembly

The gates are closed for the security of the children and the staff, and the morning assembly begins.

8.10a.m.

Classes begin

The first period starts. A child who has missed assembly has already missed the start of the day.

2.00p.m.

School closes

The school day ends. Please arrange for your ward to be collected or to leave for home promptly.

Attendance & Punctuality

What the rule means in practice

Punctuality is not a formality at St. John's — it is the first lesson of the day. Four situations, and how the school handles each.

If a child is late

The day is marked "Late"

A student who does not report on time is recorded as late in the school calendar. Repeated late marks are reviewed with the class teacher and taken up with the parents.

If a child is absent

The school must be informed

The parent or guardian must inform the school of an absence — either by a telephone call to the office or by a personal visit. Please do not send word through another student.

If attendance slips

Academic growth suffers

Parents must remain vigilant about their ward's regularity. Irregular attendance is the single most common reason a capable child begins to fall behind the class.

How we follow it

Attendance is monitored closely

The school makes it a point to monitor every pupil's attendance and punctuality, and to raise it with the family early rather than at the end of the term.

For Parents

What the school asks of you

A child's punctuality is decided at home before it is recorded at the gate. Five small habits keep the record clean.

  • Plan the morning so your ward is inside the gate before 8.00 a.m.
  • Telephone or visit the office on the first day of any absence.
  • Keep the office informed of a change in your contact number.
  • Check the school calendar for late marks and holidays.
  • Arrange collection promptly at 2.00 p.m.

Where a family faces a genuine difficulty with timings — distance, transport or illness — speak to the office. The school would far rather know than mark a child late.

Reporting an absence

Inform the school on the first day your ward will be away — a telephone call to the office is enough, and a personal visit is welcome.

A Word on Discipline

A child on time is a child ready to learn

The closed gate is not a punishment; it keeps every child and every member of staff safe inside. Kept together — school and home — these few rules give each Johnian a calm start and an unbroken year of learning.
