Curriculum & Syllabus
Taught in English, examined by four different boards
A Johnian passes through four examining authorities between kindergarten and Class XII. This page sets out which body prescribes what, how the year is examined, and what a grade at St. John's is actually measuring.
Medium of Instruction
English throughout, but not at the cost of the mother tongue
With the exception of Assamese, Bodo and Hindi, all subjects are taught exclusively in English. All facets of state government are covered in the instruction programme.
Every student has a rich and worthwhile experience through the school's adopted curriculum, guaranteeing a blossoming of their entire persona. Bolstering comprehension, boosting understanding of the subject, stimulating excitement through experiential education and honing competencies are all clearly prioritised.
In addition to enabling students to succeed academically and gain confidence and a deeper awareness of the world around them, the school offers a peaceful learning atmosphere that fosters a spirit of competitiveness and collaboration, upholds ethical standards, and assists children to accomplish their full academic potential. The aspirations, mission and vision statements that make up our organisation all reflect this philosophy of life.

The Syllabus
Who prescribes what
Four stages, four authorities — each one the body that will eventually examine the child.
KG-I & KG-II
The management and staff of St. John's Higher Secondary School, Barama
The kindergarten syllabus is prepared in the school itself, by the people who teach it.
Class I – VIII
The Examination Board of the Diocese of Bongaigaon
The eight years of primary and middle school follow the diocesan board's common syllabus.
Class IX – X
SEBA
The Board of Secondary Education, Assam prescribes both the curriculum and the syllabus for the HSLC years.
Class XI – XII
AHSEC
The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council prescribes the curriculum and syllabus for the Higher Secondary course.
Evaluation · CCE
A grade that counts more than the mark sheet
Evaluation of each student's characteristics in the classroom is the primary goal of CCE.
Students are assessed through this framework's combination of academic assessments and evaluations of their curricular and extra-curricular pursuits. By appraising those additional endeavours, it is envisaged that the volume of work for learners will be alleviated and their overarching ability and competence enhanced.
This enables students who struggle academically to demonstrate their talent in other areas — the arts, the humanities, sports and games.
What a grade measures

Open House
From time to time the school holds an Open House, when parents can discuss the progress of their children with the teachers. In case of need, parents are welcome to meet the child's teacher with a prior appointment and with the permission of the Principal.
The Examined Year
Three rhythms, running at once
A weekly test set by the subject teacher, a unit test in the middle of each semester, and the semester examination itself.
Twice a year
Two semesters
There are two semesters in each academic year, with examinations taking place at the conclusion of each.
Mid-semester
Unit test
A unit test is given in the middle of each semester, to assess the student's thorough comprehension of the curriculum covered so far.
Every week
Class tests
To improve the students' capacity for understanding, every subject teacher is required to hold class tests on a weekly basis.
The subjects behind the syllabus
The Courses page lists every subject taught at every stage, and the six Higher Secondary subject groups in full.
