Welcome
St. John's Higher Secondary School stands beside NH-27 in Barama, Baksa district — ninety kilometres from Guwahati and one of the most promising institutions in the Bodoland Territorial Region.
The school was established in 1985 by Rev. Fr. Kulandaisamy and inaugurated by Dr. Bhumidhar Barman, then Minister of Education for Assam. A religious minority institution managed by the Diocese of Bongaigaon, it follows the principles and methods of Catholic schools the world over.
Teaching runs from pre-kindergarten to Class XII under the SEBA curriculum, with the Higher Secondary section affiliated to AHSEC, Guwahati. Generations of families have passed through these gates — many of today's pupils are the children of our alumni.
SJHSS is a school of and for thinkers. Boredom or apathy is not found here.
It is my great pleasure to extend a warm welcome to you all to St. John's Higher Secondary School, Barama. Your child will be prepared for rapidly changing times with intellectual curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills.
We believe that education is about gaining knowledge and developing a strong sense of character, values and ethics.
Fr. David Soundraraj
Principal

What we stand for
The school's founding commitments, unchanged since 1985 — and still the measure of what happens in every classroom, laboratory and playing field.
Not marks alone. Every Johnian is taught to grow academically, morally, socially and physically together — the whole person, at every stage from pre-kindergarten to Class XII.
Assembly readings, house captaincies, quizzes, debates and the stage at every festival — children here are given the microphone early and learn to stand behind their own words.
A settled daily rhythm of study, practicals, revision and games. Boarders and day scholars alike keep the same disciplined hours, and results follow the habit.
A record in the SEBA and AHSEC examinations that has produced state rank holders across four decades — including a 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th place in the HSLC.
Assamese, Bodo and Hindi are taught alongside English, and Bihu, Bodo dance, Unity in Diversity day and the literary festival keep the region's traditions inside the school year.
Career guidance, the food festival, work-experience periods and project work train students to think like makers and problem-solvers, not only as candidates for an examination.
The Johnian journey
The school follows the stages set out in the National Education Policy 2020 — a continuous ladder from pre-kindergarten through to Class XII, taught on one campus.

Pre-KG to Class II
Children learn more in their first six years than in all the rest, so the school begins at three — with rhymes, reading, art, craft and play as the real curriculum.

Class III to V
Play, discovery and activity-based classroom learning, with the three languages of the region taught alongside English from the primary years.

Class VI to VIII
Experiential learning across the sciences, mathematics, the arts, social sciences and humanities — the years in which study habits are set for good.

Class IX to X
The SEBA years. Multi-disciplinary study, critical thinking and a first real choice of subjects, with the HSLC board examination at the end of Class X.

Class XI to XII
A two-year AHSEC course in Science, Commerce or Arts — English and MIL compulsory, four electives chosen from the published combinations, and laboratory practicals throughout.
Science, Commerce and Arts are all offered under AHSEC, with English and MIL compulsory and four electives chosen from the published combinations.
Campus
Digital classrooms, four science laboratories, a maths lab, two computer labs, a ten-thousand-book library, hostels, an auditorium and grounds for four sporting codes.

Library
A digitalised library covering every academic discipline, with storybooks, encyclopedias, general knowledge titles and a reference area for teachers and board classes — run by a qualified librarian.

Science
Separate chemistry, physics, botany and zoology labs, stocked with apparatus, chemicals, slides, charts, models and specimens matched to the syllabus. Forty-five to fifty students work at once.

Computing
One lab for the primary section and one for the high school and higher secondary, both air-conditioned, with interactive whiteboards and a dedicated optical-fibre broadband line.

Smart class
Interactive whiteboards and short-throw projectors in the classrooms, with courseware developed in collaboration with EBIX Smart Class Educational Services.

Boarding
St. John's Boys' Hostel and Fatima Convent Girls' Hostel — supervised study hours, mess and warden care for students whose villages are too far for the daily journey.

Grounds
Well-structured grounds for basketball, volleyball, football and cricket, an indoor games hall, and a high-tech auditorium for seminars and assemblies.
Students scan in and out at the gate, so attendance and who is on the premises are known in real time.
Updates, academic progress, teacher messages, form submissions and secure online payments in one Android app.
The campus is monitored throughout, and gate access is restricted to authorised persons only.
Routes to Barama, Nalbari and Tihu via Kodomtola, Patacharkuchi, Nityananda and Pathsala.
Results & achievement
Johnians have placed in the state merit lists of the SEBA examinations across the school's history, and the trophy room fills a little more each year.

Beyond the classroom
Sport, stage, service and leadership run right through the Johnian year — and for most of our students they are what they remember longest.

A march past behind the national flag, house contingents in colour, and two days of track and field that close on the winners' podium.

Bihu and Bodo dance, music, recitation and the inter-house literary competitions that fill the school stage through the year.

House captains, prefects and the Scouts and Guides take their pledge each year and carry the responsibility for the school's daily discipline.

International Yoga Day on the lawn, health and hygiene drives, and the social outreach that the school's mission asks of every Johnian.

Vision & Mission
Empowering students through excellence in education to shape a better future for humankind, and to share the fruit of it among the people of the BTR and Assam — working solely for God and for humanity.
To spread the light of knowledge and wisdom by accompanying young people who are academically accomplished, emotionally balanced, morally upright, socially responsible, ecologically sensitive and professionally dedicated — a force for the transformation of society.
“Let Your Light Shine” inspires us to spread the light of love and knowledge, expelling the darkness of evil and ignorance. The motto was set to music as the school anthem in 1986.
Voices
Students, parents and alumni on four decades of St. John's.
St. John's gave me more than marks — it gave me the discipline to study on my own and the confidence to speak in any room. The teachers knew every one of us by name.

As parents we wanted a school that is serious about studies but also kind to children. For both our daughters, St. John's has been exactly that for nine years now.
